Divided We Stand

Mike: Ich sehe diese Gefangenen und versuche, sie zu verstehen. Und wenn sie anfangen, von ihren Familien zu erzählen, erfährt man, wie viel sie durchgemacht haben in ihrem Leben. Einige wissen meist nicht, wer ihr Dad ist. Das führt zu einer tiefen Verunsicherung, sodass sie weder Moral, Werte noch Normen entwickeln konnten, nicht einmal um sich vor den Strafkonsequenzen zu fürchten. Viele kommen hierher und sind komplett abgestumpft.

Alesha: Wir haben Straftäter, die gehen heim und kommen wieder und gehen heim und kommen wieder. Viele sind nicht so erfolgreich, wie wir es uns für sie wünschen, aber es gibt diese neuen Programme, die ihnen helfen, Jobs zu bekommen.

Mike: I see these prisoners and try to relate to them. And if they start to talk about their family, there’s a lot of trauma that’s going on in their living rooms, in their lives. Some of them don’t even know who their dad is for the most part. So that deep destabilization, then they don’t have that instillation of ethics or values, norms, to even fear what the law consequences can give them. A lot of them come here and there’s no emotion to it at all.

Alesha: We have offenders that go home and they come back and they go home and they come back. A lot of them are not successful like we would like for them to be, but they have these new programs that help them get jobs.
